Seniors |
Parade headed to Eltham College to commence our 2010 season on Saturday April 19th. The composition of the senior side was made up of 15 regulars, 5 returning and 2 new players to the club. With a successful preseason, expectation were high with supporters eager to see a ‘new look’ OP’s for 2010.
It was a tight contest early with each team attacking the ball extremely hard; however, our 400 plus game legend in Pete Brabender slotted the first goal at the seven minute mark. Although it was an even contest around the ground, we made more of our opportunities to take a 17 point lead at quarter time.
The second quarter was similar to the first. Both sides had plenty of chances; however, skill errors and poor decision making from both sides kept the game close. We again made more of our opportunities to increase our lead to 25 points at half time. Although we were in front on the scoreboard, I felt that we lack direction and overused the ball on many occasions.
The third quarter commenced with Eltham taking complete control of the midfield. They kicked 7 goals to 4 to trail by only 1 point at the final change. With all the momentum, they continued their dominance in the last quarter to run out 22 point winners. Congratulation to the home side who clearly were more prepared to do the ‘little things’ to win the game. The players and I were extremely disappointed in our efforts. With the upcoming contest against St. Leo’s at the Garvey, we are all looking to change the trend. |
| Reserves |
The Reserves arrived at Eltham with three debutants Damian Hannam, Brad Donohue and Michael Rigg who were eager to play well in their first games for the Old Paradians and Matt Derham returning after overcoming op.
Summer type weather greeted the players as they ran onto the arena and prepared for battle. We had as our focus a FIERCE competitive attitude and to set a playing standard that we hope to maintain for the season.
Early in the first quarter we were dealt a severe blow when Michael Rigg left the field with a hand injury which we learnt later in the day was a major snapping of the tendon in his finger and will require surgery and he will be unavailable until late into the season. Although that required some changes to our structure we were still able to lead at quarter time.
The second quarter saw us break open the game and take a good lead to half-time which can be attributed to our commitment and desire to win the ball. Our rotations were having an effect on our opponents as fresh players were coming back into the game and allowing us first use.
The second half was goal for goal and although rotations were still effective, players were cramping and our run and carry was not as potent. For the players to play the game at the level they did, is to their credit, as by the time of the final siren the weather was quiet warm. It was pleasing our debutants (Hannam and Donohue) got through the game and will be good players over the season. Matt Derham kicked 5goals and played a full game which was required as we get him back to a level where he can play seniors. 25pt victory was a good result .
As Coach I was very pleased with our performance and reminded the group it is only Round 1, 17 remain.
Thank you to those who performed game day duties and special thank you to the students from the College who acted as waterboys. |
| Thirds |
The first game of the 2010 season, for the newly formed 3rd XVIII, contained many positives.
The enthusiasm for the game against Old Essendon - 2009 Premiers in Club 18 (North) - was evident from the warm up. Warm being the operative word, as the mercury reached 27 degrees for the opening game at the Grammar.
Playing with a reinforced backline structure and a running midfield of speedy, ball-carriers we played a solid and spirited first half, to trail by only 14 points at the main break, including outscoring OE in the second quarter.
Loose sweepers David Salvatico and Dean Brekke really propelled OP’s forward during the first half, along with long range kicking from David Daniele. Steve Marinucci and Marco Gentile put their bodies on the line at key contests.
Luke Varalla rucked tirelessly, bringing the ball to ground for on-ballers Adrian Spinoso and Mitch Fraser, who initiated many forward thrusts.
The good fortune of having gun forward Brett Dintinosante in our side was highlighted with a spectacular contested mark and goal in the second Quarter.
Warren Jeffrey also led well and was rewarded with a major in the second term.
Our players continued valiantly in the second half, to both defend tightly and attack keenly at every given opportunity. Fortunately for the opposition, they had a couple of very senior players and received the benefit of some contentious, home umpiring decisions, which saw the margin blow out to 64 points at the final siren.
The 3rd XVIII will continue to improve with the benefit of greater familiarity within the playing group and increased game time, for many of our inexperienced players, some who are pulling on the boots for the first time in many seasons.
Thanks to several players and supporters, who assisted with match day roles in our first game away.
Also it’s great to have Matt Williams on board, as our efficient Team Manager and Assistant Coach.
We look forward to next Saturday as we take on Old Carey at Bulleen. |
